Winter Tyres in Kent: Are They Worth It?
Kent doesn't get much snow, but winter tyres aren't just about snow. Here's whether they're worth the money in our climate.

Ask any Kent driver about winter tyres and you'll get a shrug — we don't get much snow, so what's the point? The point is that winter tyres are actually 'cold weather' tyres, and they outperform summer tyres any time the temperature drops below 7°C. That's a lot of mornings in Kent between November and March.
What makes a winter tyre different?
Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound with more silica, which stays flexible in the cold. They also have a deeper, more aggressive tread pattern with hundreds of small sipes that bite into wet roads and slush. Below 7°C, a summer tyre starts to harden — your stopping distance gets longer even on dry tarmac.
The braking difference
Independent testing has consistently shown winter tyres can stop 5–10 metres shorter than summer tyres at 50 mph on a cold, wet road — at urban speeds, that's the difference between stopping in time and a collision.
Snow & ice — the obvious win
When Kent does get a cold snap, winter tyres are transformative. They're not optional in many European countries for a reason.
Practical considerations
- Cost of a second set of tyres — but the summer set isn't wearing during winter months, so total life is similar.
- Storage — you'll need somewhere to keep four tyres for half the year.
- Wheel change twice a year, ideally on a separate set of steel wheels.
- Insurance — most insurers don't require notification but some do. Check your policy.
All-season tyres as a compromise
If you don't fancy the seasonal swap, modern all-season tyres (carrying the 3PMSF snowflake symbol) are a genuinely good compromise for Kent — better than summer tyres in the cold, and decent in the rare snow we do get.
Our take
For most Kent drivers doing local trips, quality all-season tyres are the sweet spot. Heavy mileage or rural commuters into the North Downs might justify a dedicated winter set. Call 0330 043 5521 and we'll fit either, at your home, with no shop visit needed.
