How to Tell If Your Tyre Needs Replacing
Six clear warning signs that your tyres are due for replacement, and why ignoring them is more dangerous (and expensive) than it looks.

Tyres are the only part of your car that actually touches the road, and a worn or damaged tyre quietly destroys your braking distance, grip in the wet and fuel economy long before it ever lets you down completely. Knowing the warning signs lets you replace a tyre on your terms — not at the side of the M25 in the rain.
1. Tread depth below 3mm
The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but stopping distances in the wet roughly double between 3mm and 1.6mm. We recommend replacing well before you hit the legal limit. Drop a 20p coin into the main tread groove — if you can see the outer band of the coin, it's time.
2. Uneven wear
If the inner or outer edge of the tread is wearing faster than the middle, you've probably got an alignment issue. Cupping (scalloped patches) usually means worn suspension. Either way the tyre will need replacing earlier than it should, and the underlying fault needs fixing too.
3. Cracks, bulges or cuts in the sidewall
Any visible bulge is a sign that the internal cords have been damaged — usually from a pothole or kerb hit. A sidewall bulge is not repairable. The tyre can fail without warning at speed and must be replaced immediately.
4. Vibration through the steering wheel
Vibration at motorway speeds often means a tyre is out of balance or has internal damage from a hit. Get it inspected and rebalanced. If the vibration persists after balancing, the tyre's likely beyond saving.
5. The TPMS warning light
A pressure warning light isn't always a slow puncture, but it's never nothing. Check pressures cold, look for the obvious nail or screw, and get it inspected if it returns within a few days.
6. Age
Even a tyre with plenty of tread will harden and crack with age. Anything older than 6 years should be checked annually; most manufacturers recommend replacement by 10 years regardless of tread depth. The DOT code on the sidewall shows the manufacturing week and year.
