Run-Flat vs Standard Tyres: Which Is Right for You?

The real-world pros and cons of run-flat tyres versus traditional radials — comfort, cost, repairability and what BMW won't tell you.

Tyre Rescue Team · 19 April 2026

Run-flat tyres are increasingly common, especially on BMW, MINI and some Mercedes models. They promise the convenience of not needing a spare wheel, but they come with trade-offs that aren't always made clear at the dealership.

How run-flats work

Run-flat (RFT) tyres have reinforced sidewalls that can support the weight of the car even with no air pressure. After a puncture you can typically drive up to 50 miles at 50 mph to reach a fitting centre — or call a mobile fitter.

The case for run-flats

  • No need to change a wheel at the roadside in the rain.
  • Frees up boot space — many run-flat cars have no spare.
  • Reduced risk of losing control during a sudden blowout.
  • Lower overall vehicle weight (no spare, no jack).

The case against run-flats

  • Significantly more expensive — often 20–40% more per tyre.
  • Stiffer ride: that reinforced sidewall transmits more road noise and shocks.
  • Once driven on flat, almost always non-repairable.
  • Limited brand and size availability.
  • Premature wear is common, particularly on the inner edges.

Can you switch from run-flats to standard?

Usually yes — provided you carry a tyre inflator and sealant kit or are willing to call a mobile fitter for emergencies. Many drivers prefer the comfort and lower running cost of standard tyres, and the saving on tyre replacement often pays for breakdown cover several times over.

What about mixing the two?

Never mix run-flats and standard tyres on the same axle, and ideally not on the same car. The handling characteristics are different enough to cause unexpected behaviour, particularly under hard braking.

Our recommendation

Most drivers who value comfort and lower running costs are better off with quality standard tyres. If you do a lot of solo motorway driving and value the peace of mind, run-flats earn their keep. Either way we can supply and fit both — call 0330 043 5521 for an honest recommendation for your vehicle.
